UFC 129 Fight Card: Main Event – GSP vs Jake Shields
To tell you honestly, I wasn’t expecting anything else. I’m also not very excited about the fight betweet Georges St-Pierre and Jake Shields. If you don’t know who Jake Shields is, here’s a short summary of his MMA career:
Basically, Jake Shields is a former Strikeforce middleweight champion. He’s currently holding the 15 wins streak, and he is fighting GSP on UFC 129 (which is going to be held on April 30th 2011 at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario) for the title of the middleweight UFC champion of the world. Jake Shields is a master of jiu jitsu, and to be honest, I’ve seen very few fighters in the world who can hold pace with him on the ground. If you even blink, he will submit you.
I also think that GSP will dominate this fight. The reason for this is that he is simply a much much better striker than Jake Shields is. I’m afraid that this will be the GSP vs Koscheck 2 episode rewinded. While I do think that Shields is a better grappler and a take down artist than Koscheck, his stand up game is brutally bad. GSP will once again wear him out in the 5 rounds boiring-to-see match up. St-pierre will once again secure his vitory by throwing jabs and not allowing Jake to close in the distance.
The worst part of it all is this: even if Shields close the distance and somehow manages to take Georges down, I don’t think that he is THAT much better than GSP on the ground to count. GSP is getting better every fight, and the only thing that is missing in his arsenal is the will to finish off his opponents. I mean, if GSP was able to dominate BJ Penn on the ground, I can’t see this going anywhere else. Jake has to be so fast to try to get on his back, but no one has ever been able to do this up to this date.
Jake Shields is not to be taken lightly, though. After all, my rambling is all about the fan aspect of this sport. I’m not talking about the skills. He managed to defeat both Dan Henderson and Martin Kampmann (in the UFC). The fight with Kampmann was an indicator that Jake might not be THAT bad in the stand up aspect. I give this fight to GSP though.
UFC 129 Fight Card: Co-main Event (Only Announced) – Randy Couture vs Lyoto Machida
Now this is the match up I’ve been looking for. Lightheavyweight division has always been one of my favorite to watch. Maybe the top reason for this is that there are no ultimate dominant fighters here like in some other divisions (GSP in welterweight, Silva in middleweight for example).
I can’t predict this one with 100% accuracy. Machida is too elusive to be predicted. Sometimes he is unstoppable, but as of recently I just have the feeling he will quit. If Randy allows him to keep the distance and develop his game, he will be in a lot of trouble. The thing with Machida and generally such unorthodox fighters is that you never know where their kicks or punches will fly from.
The thing with Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida is this: he’s not the same fighter he was before he was a champion. His training and attitude just haven’t been the same. He lost against Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, as well as Rampage Jackson because of this. I have no doubts that, if Lyoto behaves like in his old days, he will knock out Randy Couture. Randy simply can’t cope with the speed. He’s too old for that. The reason why he’s been able to fight these guys is because of his style after all. Watch the Machida vs Couture Fight Prediction by Trevor Harris below to see what I mean.
However, I’m going to give this fight to Randy Couture, for no other reason than his experience, as well as the downward spiral that Machida is going through. Randy will know how to close the distance and how to utilize his dirty boxing by draining Machida out against the cage. Randy is such a dangerous opponent for anyone out there because he is also very unorthodox, and he is simply a “drainer”. He might not have the best striking techniques in the world, but believe me, if he pushes you against the cage and then slowly drains you with those short punches, you will freak out. If you have ever played MMORPG games, then you will know what I mean by saying this: Randy Couture is the ultimate CC class.
Other Possible Fights:
I’ve lurked around the internet and found out that the following main fight card fights are possible:
- Ben Henderson vs. Mark Bocek
- Jonathan Brookins vs. John Makdessi
- Rory MacDonald vs. James Wilks
We’ll have to wait a bit more though. Feel free to post your own thoughts on this upcoming UFC event. Feel free to tweet, share and like this page as well. You can also watch some UFC 129 videos below if you want to. I was able to find them for ya
