So, it was finally announced who the coaches of The Ultimate Fighter Season 13 will be. To my surprise, they are Brock Lesnar and Junior Dos Santos. With Chael Sonnen being out of UFC for using steroids, and with Cain Velasquez being out for 6-8 months due to the injury, the president of UFC Dana White had no other chance but to call these 2 guys out.
Now, some of the TUF 13 rumors say that they will be fighting in June (In Vancouver, Canada), but not for the interim title. Rather, they will be fighting for the title contender position and they will ultimately challenge Cain Velasquez when he gets better.
Now, I think that these are great news. However, I think that Brock Lesnar will be a disaster of a coach. If you were watching UFC primetime back in the days when he was fighting Cain, you’d understand my point. His Deathclutch gym is fit for Lesnar’s purposes only, not for the weight class he’s going to train, which means: he won’t be able to give any good advice to these guys. This brings me to my second point; Welterweight division will be the weight class for TUF season 13.
One of the more interesting questions I’m posing here is this: how is Lesnar going to be as a coach? He’s not a real MMA fighter, because he is not well rounded. Sure, he does pose a threat to everybody who’s in the ring, but that’s simply because of his sheer strength and power. But, will he be able to teach his team something except for wrestling? Will he be able to teach them how to defend from take downs, how to throw punches, how to evade them? I don’t think so. On the other hand, Junior is a pretty well rounded guy, and I think he can show his guys lots of tips and tricks on how to become a better performing fighter. I absolutely love Junior Dos Santos, but I don’t hate Brock in any way (I only think he’s very overrated).
I think that this fight in particular (Lesnar vs Dos Santos) will be a very interesting one. While Brock has really shown on many occasions that he does have a glass chin, no one can deny his sheer take down power and brute force. On the other hand, Dos Santos has got the best pair of hands in the UFC currently (along with Vitor Belfort in my opinion). Nobody really knows how good Junior is on the ground, because he never needed to use his ground skills anyway. The guys at the Nogueira gym swear that he is on par with anybody ground wise, but we should all remember how Frank Mir ended up in his second fight. All the Jiu Jitsu in the world can’t help you if that monster of a man neutralizes you with his strength and aggressiveness.

A lot of people seem to be skeptical of how Lesnar will do as a coach. If anyone is worried about what his team will learn, just consider his potential coaching staff. If he brings in guys like Marty Morgan, Erik Paulson, Peter Welch, and Medeiros, his team will be in good hands. I also wouldn’t be surprised to see Randy Couture in some capacity, even if its just a special guest for an episode. In fact, if he brings all of those guys in, it could be one of the better coaching staffs we have seen on the show. While at a glance, it looks like TUF: Lesnar vs. JDS, it may very well end up being more along the lines of TUF: DeathClutch vs. Black House.
yep, good point there .. never thought of it that way. It’s incredible how Lesnar can become a brand by himself without even thinking about his staff.
