Silva vs Sonnen Full Fight Coverage:

Round 1: Finally, everything starts here. After so much trash talking, Chael Sonnen has finally entered the octagon. This is where we are ultimately going to see if he has something to back this up with. The first thing that I notice at the stare down is that Chael isn’t looking at Silva in the eyes. The fight begins with the words: “UFC middleweight championship is on the line”. Silva comes up first, but Chael is showing to be the more aggressive one. He lands a few middle kicks but Silva pushes him off. First take down attempt by Chael – unsuccessful. However, he is pushing the pace. Silva is evading the punches while Chael is trying to mix things up by constantly harassing with kicks. None of them are damaging, though. It’s 50 seconds into the fight and a left jab of Chael Sonnen finds it’s place on Silva’s chin. Silva is severely rocked and Chael starts to find a way to finish him off. Anderson manages to back the attack off by taking Sonnen down, but they both get back up quickly. Once again, Chael is a more dominant fighter on feet and lands a few good punches to Silva’s face. This time he takes Silva down. Silva is down pressed against the cage. Sonnen is starting to work him out. Sonnen is hitting the small punches to the face. He manages to get on Silva’s back. He’s constantly pounding him to the face, although none of the punches are really devastating. Chael rolls him on his back and continues to pound him. One of the punches hits hard. Silva is still desperately defending. Silva moves to the full guard, but Sonnen is hitting more and more. After a few seconds, he now moves to the side control. Round one is finished with Silva being completely dominated. As Joe Rogan would say – Silva hasn’t received so many punches in his entire career.

Round 2: Anderson looks very angry and starts to take the initiative. He lands a few kicks, but Chael catches one and takes Silva down again.   Once again, while trying to defend himself, Silva allows Chael to step into the half guard. Chael trying to break free from the guard b punching his ears with open hands. Chael starting to pound from the full guard position again. Chael changes his tactics by starting to throw elbows from the guard position. Manages to get a few punches in, though none of them are very damaging. On the other hand Anderson Silva is trying to pull an arm bar. In the final seconds of the round Anderson desperately tries to lock the Kimura on Sonnen, but is not able to. This round also goes to Chael Sonnen. Silva is already a beaten man.

Round 3: Silva is moving again and being the more aggressive fighter. I don’t know how long will it last though, since I have a feeling that he will get taken down again. A flashy spinning back kick from Silva, but does not quite land as it should. Chael throws himself on Silva’s feet and once again manages to take Anderson down. Chael gets on his back and once again starts to work with short punches and knees to the buttocks. Silva rolls him and gets to the full guard position for the third time in the fight. The one thing that’s very interesting is that Chael doesn’t stop hitting Silva with small, short punches that are very annoying. He mixes things a bit up again and throws some at the body too. The whole third round passed with Chael desperately trying to do something, but Silva’s guard prevailed. This round also goes to Sonnen. The fight video clearly shows that.

Round 4: Silva starts furiously as he did every round, this time throwing a flying middle kick and landing a great elbow to the face. Chael seems a bit rocked, but he gets up quickly. Both of them in an open street fight, swinging and missing. Chael tries to get to Silva’s legs once again, but the Spider manages to take him down instead. Chael does an amazing thing by actually taking down Anderson from the the floor. You’ll really have to watch the full fight video yourself to see this. Anderson is again in the full guard position trying to work it up. Sonnen as usually trying to do some damage by throwing those short punches and elbows. Silva must feel so frustrated at this point. Silva was never dominated like this. At the end of the fourth round Chael bleeds profusely, I think that this came from Silva’s elbows while defending. This round also goes to Chael. No doubt that Silva has to finish him off now if he wants to stay the UFC middleweight champion of the world. I never count him out though.

Round 5: Silva light on his feet but not as aggressive as he used to be in the first four rounds of this match. Suddenly, Chael lands a great left hook and Silva hits the canvas again. Chael starts to grind Silva out against the fence. Anderson’s defenses are great. He’s constantly keeping Chael under the full guard. But can he make anything happen? This is something I didn’t expect: while Sonnen was trying to grind him out Silva managed to pull a triangle. Chael tries to counter the position but forgets to rotate his arm, leaving it open for an armbar. This is unbelievable: Silva wins by pulling an armbar!
