Shogun vs Henderson Fight Predictions:

Right after the UFC on FOX (which was the Velasquez vs Dos Santos fight, you gotta watch that, it was a shocker for me), we have another mind-boggling event – the UFC 139. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua is facing Dan “Hendo” Henerson in the light heavyweight division. Some other notable fights on the fight card are Wanderlei Silva vs Cung Le, Uriah Faber vs Brian Bowles and  Stephan Bonnar vs Kyle Kingsbury. You can see the entire UFC 139 fight card here. Now, let’s move on to the actual prediction of this fight.

Here’s where it gets interesting. Both of these fighters are on a winning role (with Hendo beating Fedor, and Shogun beating Forrest Griffin), and I think that they are coming to this fight very confident. Let’s split this fight prediction into 3 parts, as I always do.

STRIKING: Shogun is one of the best strikers of all time. That’s simply a fact. When he comes healthy into a fight, I think that no one (except Jon Jones) can realistically stop him. Shogun also has the advantage in this department because of the fact that Dan Henderson (even though a superb wrestler to almost anyone) likes to stand and exchange punches with other guys. I’d advise him not to do this here, because if he does, Shogun will demolish him. Shogun has never been KO-ed in his life (only TKO-ed by Jon Bones Jones).

Henderson is also a strong striker (he has his own famous H-bomb), but I simply can’t imagine him winning this fight on feet. Sure, he can throw an H-bomb that can finish the fight (like what JDS did to Velasquez, although I still think that Velasquez is a superior fighter..but that’s just what UFC is.. ), I simply don’t see it happening though.

WRESTLING: Hendo has always been on top of his game when it comes to wrestling. I mean, he threw Fedor Emelianenko, a natural heavyweight, on the floor. Hendo has total advantage in wrestling, because this is also Shogun’s weakest point. Throughout his career, Shogun has been struggling with wrestling, and I don’t think that he even has the motivation  to learn it better. However, although pretty easy to take down, Shogun can get back on feet pretty quickly.

GROUND: Ground game also goes to Hendo, but it’s not that clear whether he can actually do something to Shogun Rua on the floor. Shogun has great jiu jitsu, and as I’ve already said it, he get’s up quickly when taken down. Dan is a pretty tough and mobile guy on the floor though. He could sub Rua if he wears him out, but I don’t think that the fight is going to last long enough to be worn out.

I’d definitely say that Rua has the advantage in this fight, although he loses in 2 aspects (wrestling and ground). I base this prediction on the fact that he is a superior striker with more hunger to climb to the top again. Sure, Hendo is on a winning streak, but he’s just too old and probably worn out because he pretty much did everything he could in his career (including beating the best heavyweight of all time). I predict that Shogun is going to end this fight in the first or second round via a KO by punches.

UPDATE: I just read the Shogun vs Henderson predictions on Bleacher report. You can see the whole fight card predictions here. I don’t agree with them saying that Henderson will be able to take this fight to the ground however. The main reason I’m saying this is the fact that Hendo enjoys to play his opponent’s game and beat his opponent right there. I just don’t think that he’ll be able to do that against Shogun. I guess I’m saying that he’s going to fall into his own trap here.

Shogun vs Henderson Full Fight Coverage:

Well, Dan Henderson won this fight via a unanimous decision. The awkward thing about this fight is the fact that it was scheduled for 5, 5 minute rounds although it wasn’t a title fight.

Dan Henderson indeed won this fight very closely. After watching the Shogun vs Henderson fight video, I really have to give it to him.

Round 1: In the first round, Dan Henderson almost caught Shogun into a guillotine, but Shogun managed to defend himself. After that defense, Hendo started to throw a barrage of punches. Luckily for Shogun, none of them did any substanital damage. His left part of the forehead got bloody. The rest of the round was pretty much the same: both of these guys exchanging punches. It was a very interesting round, since there weren’t any moments of boring fence grind. This round went to Henderson. I’m surprised how well he copes with Shogun on feet.

Round 2: Round 2 started off with a bit of clinching, but it all went to the distance pretty soon. I’m surprised how good of a striking game Dan Henderson actually has. He won most of the exchanges, with Shogun missing most of his shots. Hendo was also a lot more aggressive, with Shogun focusing more on counter striking. This round also went to Henderson in my opinion. Shogun looked like he was burnt out, and I think that the reason for this is the damage done by Henderson in the first round.

Round 3: The beginning of the third round was a bit of a stall. When watching the Shogun vs Henderson full fight video, I noticed that the third round was kinda decisive for the winner. After a few seconds, Henderson started to throw a few punches, with 1 right jab hitting the spot. Shogun went to the ground and I expected Hendo to finish it. However, Shogun somehow managed to survive and got back on feet. They moved to the fence for the rest of the round (I noticed that Shogun is severely injured and tired). Shogun managed to score a pathetic take down. That was pretty much it in this round. IMHO, this round also went to Henderson.

Round 4: 4th round was spectacular! This whole fight was spectacular also! You should watch it definitely. Basically, the first half of the 4th round was characterized by various take down attempts by both of these fighters. However, in the second half, Hendo was obviously tired. Shogun hit a devastating uppercut, but it seemed as though Hendo took it manly. He was tired though. Shogun has scored another take down with a choke attempt, but Hendo rolled over and got on top of Rua. This round was close, but I would give it to Mauricio Shogun Rua.

Round 5: The fifth round was a complete domination of Shogun. He scored a take down very early on, and from then on, he maintained his position on top of Dan Henderson. Henderson obviously gassed out and it was only the fatigue of Shogun that stopped him from TKO-ing Dan Henderson.

In the end, the judges declared that the winner is Dan Henderson (unanimous decision). I don’t know I feel that this fight could have  gone into both directions. This was definitely one of the best MMA fights of all time, and I definitely recommend that you watch the Shogun vs Henderon fight video.

Shogun should win this fight via a TKO. I just don’t see Henderson being successful in exchanging firepower with him.

You’re wrong there buddy. I see this fight going completely opposite from his predictions. I think that Hendo will shock the world by proving that he’s also one of the best strikers in the MMA. How? He’ll KO Shogun in the first round via an H-bomb, you’ll see.

Well, it all comes down to who will land the first punch. In my opinion, Shogun is a better striker, but I can’t imagine Hendo allowing himself to exchange blows with Shogun. If the fight ends on feet, I have no doubts about Shogun simply destroying Henderson.
