Evans vs Davis Fight Predictions:

With Rashad Evans coming back from a long pause, and with an impressive streak of Phil Davis (9-0 up until now in the UFC), how is this fight going to end?

When it comes to striking aspect, I will have to give this fight to Rashad Evans. Why? Well, we have to take into account that Rashad Evans has ended five of his fights with brutal (I would say) knockouts. He even earned his title ( at UFC 92) with a knockout. Don’t forget that he KO-ed MMA starts like Chuck Lidell and Forrest Griffin. Although we can’t really say that Phil Davis has any major holes in his game, I would say that striking is his weakest point. He was struggling with Lil Nog; in fact, Nogueira managed to get some shots in. If Rashad is smart enough, he will definitely want to keep this fight standing. Keeping Davis at distance and then knocking him out with a big overhead is what Rashad “Suga” Evans ought to do. On the other hand, Davis should avoid any stand up confrontations with Evans, he should take him down as soon as possible.

Now, the wrestling aspect is a whole other deal. Personally, I think that Rashad should keep this fight standing, but I know that a lot of you will argue how great of a wrestler he is. I agree, he is a great wrestler, but he just doesn’t stand a chance against a 4 time all-American. In fact, i don’t think that anyone in the light heavyweight division is better than Davis currently. Rashad will have some serious issues if he allows Davis to clinch. Brian Stann is not a name to laugh at, and you saw what Davis did to him with his top control and wrestling. Davis will definitely try to take Rashad down. This is his game to lose (I mean in the wrestling department, of course).

The ground game is pretty solid by both of them, but we just don’t really know how good Rashad really is on the floor, since he was rarely even there. The black belt under the Gracie should earn him some respect though. Phil Davis also has a very solid ground game. He even manages to surprise everyone by locking in some great submissions (Philmura, anyone? – UFC 123). Just for the sake of the familiarity, I will give the advantage to Phil Davis here.

With all of that being said, I will give a slight advantage in this fight to Rashad Evans. Despite the fact that he’s been off for a long time, he is still probably the top 3 fighter in the light heavyweight division. He is also physically stronger than Phil Davis (not more explosive though), because he initially fought as a heavyweight. When it comes to conditioning, Davis has the advantage here (he doesn’t gas out), but I think that Rashad will be able to control his take downs because of his sheer strength. I think that Evans will win this fight because he is honestly a better all around fighter with dominant stand up. He’ll be able to keep this fight standing and will win with a KO in the second round. Your thoughts?

Evans vs Davis News & Updates:

This is the section where I’ll be posting news and updates concerning the Rashad Evans vs Phil Davis fight. So, bookmark this page and check it often.

January 17th, 2012 - I just watched the video of interview (by Cagefanatic) with Rashad Evans. He said that he think that he has the advantage in this fight because he thinks he is better at taking the fight where he wants to. Evans also said that he will not allow Davis to take him down. You can watch the full video here.

January 18th, 2012 - I read an interview that Yahoo Sports made with Rashad Evans today. It’s a very interesting interview because it’s not all trash talking and boasting. Actually, Rashad does make a few good points about this fight. First of all, he said that the college wrestling of Phil Davis is excellent, but his MMA wrestling is merely OK. He makes a great distinction of the two. Also Rashad said that Phils transition from punches to a take down attempt is “trash”. All in all, a very interesting interview. Click here to read it .

January 21th, 2012 – After hearing the UFC on FOX 2 media call, I can tell you that this fight is going to be a fierce one. After a few minutes of silence, trash talking between Rashad Evans and Phil Davis started. The funny thing is that Bisping came in and said something like this: “it’s about time, I was about to start falling asleep“. Rashad claimed that Davis is not ready for this fight and that he knows it. He also accused him of not being a real fighter, since Davis wouldn’t fight in the UFC if he wasn’t getting paid for it. Evans, of course, claims that he would fight in the UFC even if he didn’t get paid.  Davis eventually responded with: “I will remind you on what you said with every shot when I’m on top of you”. Well, I guess that these pre-fight trash talking trends are not on a decline whatsoever. We’ll just have to watch the Evans vs Davis fight video (Evans vs Davis full fight video) to find out. Here’s the link for a full media call summary.

January 24th, 2012 – Rashad Evans did an interview with Sun Times. He says that he’s very honored to be the part of a main event which is going to be broad casted on national television. He also said that he loves Chicago and that it is the most beautiful city in the world. Although he lives in Chicago, his training camp is in Florida (the Blackzilian gym). In my opinion, this interview doesn’t reveal a lot, but I like a more laid back type of an interview with a  fighter. Don’t forget to watch the Evans vs Davis fight, and if you miss it, you can watch the Evans vs Davis fight video (full fight).

January 24th, 2012 – I just watched the Evans vs Davis fight video simulation by UFC Undisputed 3 video game. The scary part about it is the fact that this simulation really is accurate, since all of the previous fights that it predicted were spot on. Watch the simulation here (predicts that Evans will win).

January 27th, 2012 – Only one day before the fight, and I’m getting very excited. I just watched the UFC on FOX 2 Evans vs Davis pre-fight conference, and I gotta tell you: this was one of the most entertaining press conferences ever. I’m going to focus on the Evans vs Davis part here: First of all, Rashad was very cool, which is not the case so often.

But, he did trash talk Phil Davis a lot. He said that Phil Davis is a trash wrestler, and if they fought in a wrestling match, Rashad would’ve definitely won. He also said that Davis can’t punch no one, because he strikes with his fists open. I had such a great laugh at this. Phil responded that someone has to test this man (Evans) for drug usage.  Here is the link to the pre-fight conference video (the actual video begins at around 12:00).

U’re right; Evans is simply a more well rounded fighter at this point of Phils career. However! I really see Davis as the next champion of the light heavyweight division in the upcoming years. He has the strength of Jon Jones, he’s a great wrestler, but he can still pack a great punch if he manages to land one of those sloppy kicks of his. However, Rashad wins this fight with a KO in the second round, I’m pretty positive about that. Can’t wait for the Evans vs Davis fight video, since I can’t afford the pay per view this month :(

MAn, after watching that pre fight conference I gotta say that I now officially hate Phil Davis. That dude is just annoying as hell… I mean, saying that somebody is on drugs is so disrespectful no matter how much “joking” you put in.Anyways, Rashad will easily win this one. He’s a better all around fighter and he will simply dominate Davis on ground too. He’s right- college wrestling and MMA wrestling are 2 different things, they always will be.
