Aldo vs Mendes Fight Predictions:
I will give you a short, but possibly a very precise prediction of the Jose Aldo vs Chad Mendes fight.
STRIKING: In my opinion, Jose Aldo is one of the top 3 strikers in the UFC (along with Alistair Overeem and JDS). His Muay Thai is legendary, which is kinda surprising, coming from a Brazilian fighter. What fascinates me about Jose Aldo is the fact that all of his strikes are very explosive and very hard to deal with even though they aren’t always aimed for the head. Take his low kicks for example. They always hinder the movement so hard on his opponent, which allows him to effortlessly execute konk out punches.
Chad Mendes is mediocre at best on his feet. The only proof I have for this is his record. Out of his 11 wins (11-0 record), 7 of them were via a unanimous decision. This means that he doesn’t have a lot of firepower in his hands.
WRESTLING: Although a lot of people will give the advantage to Mendes here, you have to be very careful when your opponent is a Muay Thai master. Do you remember the sentence in my Lesnar vs Overeem prediction? I said that a lot of people underestimate Muay Thai clinching in favor of wrestling. In fact, I think that Aldo is a more explosive guy, and that his explosiveness will allow him even to control the clinching aspect (if it comes to that).
GROUND: Well, Chad Mendes is a 2-time All-American. His wrestling is better that Aldo’s and I do think that he might do something on the ground. However, you should also remember that Jose Aldo has a black belt in Brazilian jiu jitsu, so I think that this will cancel the advantage of Mendes out. One other thing: Aldo has a remarkable takedown defense. In his fight against Kenny Florian he has demonstrated how hard to take down he really is. Keep in mind that Florian is a bigger fighter than Mendes.
To conclude this prediction, I think that Jose Aldo will win this fight via a KO in the second round. He is simply a better stand up fighter, and even if it comes to the ground, he will either submit Mendes, or put the fight back on feet.

January 9th, 2012 - I’ve found a video of the Aldo vs Mendes prediction by MMAnuts. Basically, they took a flashback to the Aldo vs Florian fight and predicted this fight the same way. Kenny Florian held his ground, until the last round where he got destroyed. They speculate that Chad Mendes is a weaker fighter than Florian, and that he will lose swiftly. January 11th, 2012 - I just read the interview with Gray Maynard at MMAfighting.com. Basically, Maynard is helping Jose Aldo with his wrestling against Chad Mendes. He said that Jose Aldo is probably the most complete fighter he’s ever had a chance to work with. He also said that Chad Mendes is a great fighter, but still too young to face Jose Aldo. January 12th, 2012 - I’ve found a video of UFC Undisputed 3 (a video game) Aldo vs Mendes fight simulation. Basically, Aldo won 14 out of 25 simulated matches. For other stats, make sure you watch the entire video.
January 13th, 2012 - I just watched the Countdown to UFC 142 video, and I have to say that it was pretty solid this time. The video above is just about the Aldo vs MEndes fight, but you can watch both parts on Youtube. The first section deals with Jose Aldo moving to Rio and marrying his wife. He also talks about how poor he was before he started with UFC. Kind of a same story for every Brasilian fighter. The second part focuses on Chad Mendes and his teammates (most notably Urijah Faber) talking about his strategy on how to win against Aldo. Pretty interesting video. I highly suggest you watch it if you wanna know more about these 2 fighters.

ROUND 1: Surprisingly, Chad Mendes starts off strong, throwing low kicks himself against Jose Aldo. However, Aldo picks up quickly and shows how much his low kicks are better than Chad’s. Chad Mendes attempts to take Aldo down a few times, but Aldo manages to defend against the take downs easily. Mendes presses Aldo against the cage, trying to grind him out, and eventually trying to put him down. However, Aldo somehow manages to turn around and hits Mendes with a strong knee (straight to the face). Mendes falls down, and the fight ends by a KO (Jose Aldo).
January 17th, 2012 - UFC released the post-fight interview video with Jose Aldo. He said in the interview that the fans gave him strength so he celebrated the victory with them. He also said that Mendes is a tough guy, but that his strategy worked out well. He’s promising a lot of knockouts in the future as well.

I don’t know why are you so sure about Aldo winning this fight easily. I mean, Mendes is a 2 time all american, and honestly, I haven’t seen a better wrestler in the featherweight division for years. Sure, you might argue that he doesn’t have the finishing power, but you can’t deny that he didn’t try to finish all of his fights. My hunch is telling me that this fight is gonna be a huge surprise for everyone. Mendes wins via a unanimous decision after grinding Aldo out.By the way, is this fight scheduled for 5, 5minute rounds? I know that all the title fights are, I just wanna make sure.

Whata knockout man. Definitely one of the best I’ve seen in a while. The way Aldo moves and defends against takedowns is just hard to believe. In my book hes definitely in the top 3 p4p fighters in the world atm.
